United States. Live answering and virtual receptionists

Which answering service is best for what you need it to do?

Price is the easy part of this decision and it is not usually the part people get wrong. What separates these providers is capability: whether they name the systems they connect to, whether they will book into your calendar, whether anyone will put a compliance claim in writing. We read six US providers' own published pages on 15 August 2026 and compared what each will actually commit to, rather than what each says it is good at.

What you need
AI option
Option
Smith.ai Anyone whose calls have to land inside a system, not just a message inboxNone. Its features page names no industry specialisation at all, which is unusual here and reads as deliberate: the pitch is the workflow rather than the sector. The only provider here that names them. Calendly, Zapier with 5,000 or more apps, an open API, Microsoft Teams, Slack and Google Analytics, plus pushing calls, chats and contact information into your CRM.Books appointments for new leads or existing clients directly on your calendar, and states its agents securely check for conflicts in law firm CRMs before booking. That conflict check is a specific claim nobody else here makes.Bilingual agents, and a dedicated Spanish line where every call can be answered and handled in Spanish. Spanish speaking agents are also available for outreach.Completes new client intake forms so lead information goes to your CRM, and captures and qualifies leads against your target audience. States no overseas agents. 24/7 is included on every plan at no extra cost.No standalone AI tier. Agents and AI work together on 24/7 website chat, and 24/7 outbound calling is offered. The human answers the phone.
Specialty Answering Service Healthcare, and anyone who needs the widest published sector coverageTwenty five, the widest published list here: accounting, advertising, agriculture, apparel, automobile, career, chemical, construction, education, energy, engineering, entertainment, financial, funeral, government, healthcare, IT, legal, non profit, professional services, real estate, retail, telecommunications, transportation and travel.None named. It publishes a software portal for call recording, monitoring and message archiving, and live script editing, but no third party integrations by name. Not stated as a named capability. A live operator is available 24 hours a day to answer phones, take messages and transfer calls. Not mentioned on its industries page.States HIPAA compliant service for the entire healthcare industry, the only explicit HIPAA claim among the providers here. Also states 24/7 live voice reception and dispatch for transportation, and lead tracking for attorneys.None offered. A human floor of 300 or more US based operators.
Abby Connect A named sector list with a cheap AI tier to fall back onNine, named specifically: legal, home services, business services, financial services, healthcare, beauty and wellness, dental, chiropractic and accounting. A shorter list than the widest here, but a more particular one.CRM integrations are mentioned but no platform is named. It does publish a portal and mobile app, and AI generated call summaries, transcripts, recordings and customer sentiment scores.Receptionists handle scheduling, and the AI tier can schedule appointments day or night. Its pricing page attaches Calendly scheduling to plans by tier: one event type on Professional, up to three on Growth.English and Spanish speaking receptionists. Its pricing page offers a HIPAA compliance option and its features page does not mention HIPAA, so confirm which applies to your plan before relying on it. Call blocking is offered to block unwanted calls, and 24/7 answering is an option rather than a default.A full AI receptionist ladder from $99 a month for up to 50 minutes after a 14 day free trial, rising to $690 for up to 500. The cheapest published route into an AI receptionist among the providers here that also staff humans.
PATLive Trades and property, where the industry list is long and the rate card is publicTwenty three, weighted to trades and property: plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, contractors, construction, landscaping, real estate and its investor, broker, title and settlement, home inspector and property manager variants, plus legal, financial services, agencies, ecommerce, nonprofits, industrial supply, IT and SaaS, medical and wellness and chiropractors.None named.Appointment scheduling is offered across industries, alongside lead capture, message taking, client intake and order management. No integration is named to book into.Bilingual support is offered, priced separately at $20 a month rather than included. No HIPAA claim, though medical and wellness and chiropractors are named as industries served. States 100% live US based receptionists on 24/7/365 coverage.None offered. Live web chat is sold separately from $100 a month for 10 chats, and outbound calling at $460 a month for 40 contacts with a $250 one time setup fee.
Ambs Call Center Anyone who wants to mix humans and AI on one accountNone published on its pricing page.None named. Not published. Not published.States 100% U.S. based agents on 24/7/365 coverage, working from Jackson, Michigan and Tampa, Florida. It is the only provider here that names its floor locations. The cheapest AI entry point in this table at $19 a month, and the only provider here publishing an explicit hybrid tier that mixes real people with AI on the same account rather than selling them as separate products.
AnswerFirst Unpredictable volume, where an allowance would be the wrong shapeNone published on its pricing page.Integrations are stated to exist but none is named. Call recordings and web portal access are published. Not published. Not published.States U.S. based representatives on 24/7/365 coverage, and that nights, weekends and holidays carry no extra fee. That last point is worth more than it looks: after hours is where most answering services earn their keep and where surcharges usually live.None offered.

How we chose these, and how they are ordered

Six US providers that answer business calls with live agents. Every statement here was read from the provider's own site on 15 August 2026, from the pages cited against each row, and nothing is taken from a review site or a listicle.

Order runs by how much of its capability a provider will commit to in public: named integrations and specific process claims first, then explicit compliance claims, then published sector lists, then providers that publish staffing and hours but little else. That is a ranking of disclosure, which we can check, rather than of quality, which we cannot.

Where a provider does not publish something, the cell says not published rather than being left blank or filled with a guess. Several of the most useful cells in this table are that phrase, and they are findings rather than gaps in our reading.

This page deliberately does not compare price. Charging models in this market differ so much that they need their own comparison, and putting a rate beside a capability list invites the false conclusion that the dearer provider is the more capable one.

Answering Service Picker is an independent site operated by Ellul Solutions Ltd. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any answering service named here, and nothing on it is legal, clinical or compliance advice. We take no commission from any provider in this comparison and carry no paid placements. Capabilities and terms change without notice: every statement carries the date we read it on the provider's own page, and a compliance claim on a website is a starting point for a written question, never a substitute for one.

What US answering services will commit to in public, 2026

Last updated

Providers compete on claims and disclose very differently. This table records what each one publishes on its own site about the five things buyers ask us about most, so the absences are as visible as the claims.

Read from each provider's own pages on 15 August 2026, cited in full below: pricing pages for all six, plus features pages for Smith.ai and Abby Connect and industries pages for Specialty Answering Service and PATLive. A cell says what the provider states. Where a provider does not address something on the pages we read, the cell says not published or no claim, and that is a statement about its published material on that date, not an assertion that the capability is absent. Industry counts are counts of sectors named on the provider's own industries page; a provider with no industries page counts as 0, which is why Smith.ai scores zero while naming the most integrations. Nothing here is derived, inferred or averaged.

Common questions

Which is the best answering service in the US?

There is no single answer and any page giving one is guessing, because the providers differ on capability rather than on quality. Of the six US providers we read on 15 August 2026, Smith.ai is the only one naming its integrations, Specialty Answering Service is the only one making an explicit HIPAA claim, Ambs Call Center has the cheapest AI entry at $19 a month, and PATLive names the longest trades and property industry list. Which of those matters is a fact about your business, not about the market.

Which US answering services are HIPAA compliant?

Only one of the six states it outright. Specialty Answering Service states HIPAA compliant service for the entire healthcare industry. Abby Connect offers a HIPAA compliance option on its pricing page while its features page does not mention HIPAA, so the plan you buy decides it. PATLive names medical and wellness and chiropractors as industries served but makes no HIPAA claim. Smith.ai, Ambs Call Center and AnswerFirst make none on the pages we read.

Do answering services integrate with my CRM?

Usually they claim to, and usually they do not say with what. Smith.ai is the only provider here naming its integrations: Calendly, Zapier with 5,000 or more apps, an open API, Microsoft Teams, Slack and Google Analytics. Abby Connect mentions CRM integrations without naming a platform and attaches Calendly scheduling by plan tier. AnswerFirst states integrations exist and names none. The other three name none at all.

Can an answering service book appointments for me?

Three of the six publish it. Smith.ai books directly on your calendar and states its agents check for conflicts in law firm CRMs before booking, which is the most specific scheduling claim here. Abby Connect has receptionists handle scheduling, with Calendly event types allocated by plan tier and AI scheduling available around the clock. PATLive offers appointment scheduling across its industries without naming a calendar to book into.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a human one?

Substantially, on published prices. Ambs Call Center starts an AI tier at $19 a month against $149 for 100 human minutes. Abby Connect starts AI at $99 a month after a 14 day free trial, against $329 for its cheapest human plan. Ambs Call Center is also the only provider here publishing a hybrid tier that mixes real people and AI on one account rather than selling them separately. The other four offer no standalone AI tier.

Does 24/7 cover mean nights and holidays cost nothing extra?

Not automatically, and only some say so. AnswerFirst states nights, weekends and holidays carry no extra fee. Smith.ai states 24/7 is included on all plans at no extra cost. PATLive states 24/7/365. Abby Connect publishes 24/7 as an option with weekend answering included, which is a different shape and worth pricing if evenings are the reason you are buying. None of the six publishes a holiday surcharge as a rate.

Does it matter where the agents are based?

Every provider here thinks so, because all six make a staffing claim. PATLive states 100% live US based receptionists, Specialty Answering Service states USA based operators with 300 or more staff, AnswerFirst states U.S. based representatives, and Smith.ai states no overseas agents. Abby Connect states an in house team at a Las Vegas office rather than remote staff. Ambs Call Center goes furthest and names its floors, in Jackson, Michigan and Tampa, Florida.
